There is no one gap that works for every deck. The right spacing depends on the board material, its moisture content, the fastening system, the weather during installation, and the manufacturer instructions. Why deck board spacing matters
The gap between deck boards has two jobs. First, it allows rainwater, melting snow, leaves, and debris to move through the deck surface rather than collecting on top of it. Standing water can leave stains, encourage mildew, and keep the framing beneath the boards wetter for longer than it should be.
Second, spacing gives boards room to move. Wood expands when it takes on moisture and shrinks as it dries. Composite and PVC boards move differently, often with more lengthwise expansion and contraction as temperatures change. A deck surface installed too tightly can buckle, hold water, or push boards out of alignment. One installed with oversized gaps can look rough, catch small items, and expose more of the framing below.
Consistent spacing also matters visually. Uneven joints are easy to notice across a large deck, especially in a wide entertaining area where the boards run toward a set of stairs or a patio door. Good craftsmanship means the drainage, movement, and finished appearance all work together.

Pressure-treated wood decking
Pressure-treated lumber needs a different approach than dry, kiln-dried boards because it often arrives with a high moisture content. Fresh pressure-treated boards may shrink noticeably as they dry. When those boards are installed with a wide gap on day one, that gap can become too large after a season of drying.
For wet pressure-treated decking, boards are commonly installed nearly touching or with a very small gap, often around 1/16 inch, so the natural drying process creates the needed space. The boards should not be forced tightly together. They still need a path for water to escape, and each board should be checked for straightness as it is fastened.
If pressure-treated boards are already dry, a gap closer to 1/8 inch is often appropriate. Some projects may call for more space, particularly where drainage is a concern or the board profile varies. The condition of the lumber matters more than a one-size-fits-all rule.
Cedar and other natural wood boards
Cedar, redwood, and similar decking boards are valued for their natural appearance, but they still respond to moisture. Dry boards generally need a planned gap at installation, often around 1/8 inch. Boards installed during damp weather or boards that have been stored outdoors may require less space than fully dried stock.
Natural wood also benefits from careful board selection. A heavily cupped or warped board can create inconsistent gaps even when the installer starts with the right spacer. Proper fastening, straightening, and layout keep the deck surface looking intentional rather than pieced together.
Composite decking
Composite deck boards do not absorb water like wood, but that does not mean they can be installed tight together. Most composite products require a side-to-side gap for drainage and a separate end-to-end gap for thermal movement. Many hidden fastening systems establish a consistent side gap, often around 1/4 inch, but the required dimension varies by product line and fastener.
End gaps deserve special attention. Composite boards can expand and contract lengthwise as temperatures rise and fall. The needed gap at butt joints, picture-frame borders, walls, posts, and other fixed objects may change based on the temperature at installation. A board installed on a cool day needs more room to expand in summer than one installed in hot weather.

PVC decking
PVC decking is highly resistant to moisture, making it a strong choice for homeowners who want a low-maintenance surface. It also has its own expansion and contraction requirements. In many cases, PVC needs careful end spacing, especially on long runs and darker boards that absorb more heat.
The gap between board edges may be set by the approved hidden fastener, while the gaps at ends and around obstructions must be measured according to the specific product. This is not a place to rely on a spacer left over from a wood deck project. PVC is a different material, and it needs to be treated that way.
Side gaps, end gaps, and perimeter gaps are different
A common mistake is treating every gap on a deck as if it serves the same purpose. The spacing between the long edges of boards primarily handles drainage and surface appearance. The gap where two board ends meet handles expansion, contraction, and the practical realities of joining boards over proper framing.
Perimeter gaps are equally important. Decking should not be pressed against a house wall, post, railing sleeve, or stair structure. A small, deliberate clearance prevents boards from binding as they move and gives water a place to drain. It also keeps dirt and wet debris from becoming trapped in a tight edge.
Butt joints should land on sufficient framing. Depending on the design and product, builders may use doubled joists, blocking, or a planned breaker-board layout so every board end is properly supported and can be fastened cleanly. A random seam with inadequate support is not solved by choosing a better gap.
Use the fastening system as part of the plan
Hidden fasteners can make a deck surface look clean and uniform, but they are not interchangeable. Many systems are designed to create a specific board-to-board spacing. Using the fastener made for the selected decking is usually the most reliable way to achieve consistent side gaps without constantly measuring each row.
Face-fastened wood decks require more hands-on layout. Spacers can help, but they are only a starting point. Check the alignment every few courses, particularly when working with long boards. Small variations add up quickly. A deck may begin square at the house and end with a visibly uneven final board if the layout is not monitored throughout the installation.
Fasteners should also be placed according to the board manufacturer and framing plan. Proper spacing will not compensate for loose boards, missing fasteners, or joists that are too far apart for the decking product. The surface, fasteners, and framing need to perform as one system.
Plan for Virginia weather and everyday use
In Stafford and throughout Northern Virginia, a deck may see humid summer storms, leaf buildup in fall, freezing temperatures, and strong direct sun. Those conditions make drainage and movement more than cosmetic concerns. Homeowners should also consider how the deck will be used. A standard drainage gap is usually comfortable underfoot, but very wide gaps can be inconvenient around outdoor dining areas or for families with small children. The goal is not the widest possible opening. It is the correct opening for the material and the finished design.
Mistakes that create spacing problems
Spacing problems often begin before the first board is installed. Mixing board types or moisture conditions can lead to uneven gaps after the deck acclimates. Installing composite boards without checking the current manufacturer instructions can leave too little room at the ends. Assuming a hidden fastener handles every expansion detail can cause trouble at perimeter boards and butt joints.
Another issue is ignoring debris. Even a properly spaced deck needs occasional cleaning. Leaves, mulch, and dirt that settle between boards hold moisture against the framing and can slow drainage. A simple seasonal sweep or rinse helps the deck surface do the job it was built to do.
For an existing deck with tight boards, buckling, or standing water, the right repair depends on the cause. Boards may have swollen, fasteners may be failing, or the original layout may not have allowed for movement. Cutting wider gaps into an old deck is not always the best answer, particularly if the framing or board condition needs attention first.
